Dog Welfare for a Better Health

The dog next door doesn't get sick so much anymore, so I let it in to my house for the first time in months. Now if I was depressed the little dog would be black of course. However the dog is white, therefore I must be happy. Very happy, in fact. I wonder how little black dogs describe having a depression?

Once upon a time, in a life long lost, I knew a girl who postulated that white dogs did white poos and darker dogs eliminated darker substances. Not being overly knowledgeable about the welfare of dogs' digestive systems, I was easily convinced by her. Of course this might have been more related to her being a rather attractive blond. And also that blond was probably the color that best described her own eliminations.

But it's the blond that is the hair of the dog next door I want to talk about today.

Sweaters That Knit Themselves

Being a devout follower of how to live the artist's life, you will already be aware of my fantastically tortuous method of preparing meals. Well the dog next door has brought a similar happiness to life. Moodily - and happily so, I feel I must emphasize - dressing in dark clothing mostly of wool, I find myself not only covered in Pythagoras' - for that is the little blighter's name - hairs, but I am completley enmeshed with them. It's as if they have knitted themselves into my wool wear.

Sweaters That Knit Themselves

But why happiness you ask? Well if I were simply coverd in hairs I could merely grab some tape - scotch, sello, duct, masking, electric - and apply it until not a hair remained. Once upon a time in a life lost before my earlier lost life, I watched a woman do this very successfully to her fine-knit skirt of clinging black wool. Entranced, I just about managed to get the words out where I pointed out to her - helpfully, I felt - that many people would be very willing to pay money to watch her do this. Broke as I was, she continued until the last of her blond hairs was removed.

Art Takes Time

No it's not the wonderful memory that I am presently grateful to Pythagoras for - though that is a pleasant bonus. No. It's the time it takes me to manually de-hair my clothing.

Pythagoras Theory

A less patient artist would probably switch their wardrobe to a paler variety, perhaps white itself, and thereby in an instant seem so much happier to the world and indeed with the world. But it would be fraudulent. A Theory of Pythagorean Happiness based on color and camoflage. I however, could not be happier. Dressing still in black and navy, or for those frivolous nights, a very dark purple, I first get to spend three to four hours hand-plucking individually little white hairs from between the stitches. We choose our tediums. Oh look, there's a white poo on the white carpet.

Paul Dorrell says:

"Depression is a common malaise, even more common among artists"

Gratification by Vegetables

I painted an Avocado. A fruit, you say, spotting my first mistake. You're wrong; my first mistake was painting it. And anyway according to RecipeGoldmine.com, an Avocado is a fruit treated as a vegetable. How do you treat your vegetables?

Inspired by Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death I took my paints out. Well okay I didn't - they're always out. It was my intentions I took out. So to speak. Tell me though, and I have as much time for Shannon Tweed as the next man, but why would the world need a campy send-up of California?

-I like your painting of the pear.
-I don't have a painting of a pear.
-Well your painting of the pear-shaped fruit then.
-It's a vegetable.
-It's a pear-shaped vegetable?
-Yes. It's an Avocado.
-An Avocado is a pear.
-It doesn't taste like a pear.
-It's an Alligator Pear.
-It doesn't taste like an alligator.
-It refers to its appearance.
-And yet it's not alligator-shaped I can't help but notice.
-But it is alligator skin-like, you will agree?
-If I will agree, why do you ask?
-To find out why you painted it like a pear.
-I painted it like an Avocado.
-Which is also called an Avocado Pear.
-But my painting is not called An Avocado Pear.
-You do know that an Avocado is a fruit and not a vegetable.
-Ah, but it is treated like a vegetable.
-When?
-In conversation.

According to Murray Dessner, Paul Dorrell in his book Living the Artist's Life, has broken new ground here, and in doing so has been able to share the fruits of his successes and failures with us.

Containers Contained

I was in London recently. Spent a couple of days in the Tate Modern. It was my last chance to see the current much-criticized curatorial arrangement. Next spring it's leaving behind its thematic arrangement and going to a more conventional chronological one. But as you know, I have an obsession with boxes, so I was rather pleased with what was currently in the Turbine Hall. And I was disappointed.

The Unilever Series

Rachel Whiteread is the latest artist to create an exhibit for this most magnificent of spaces. Embankment, is the current commission in the Unilever series.

The View Looking Down

From the ledge which crosses the middle of the space you are looking down on Mayan piles of sugar lumps. In reality each white lump is one of several different models of boxes from which Rachel made molds and then created resin casts. Did I like it?

Monumental Spaces

Well, yes, to a point. It's the Turbine Hall though. Is there a more challenging space for an artist on the planet - indoors? Rachel's arctic Giants' Causeway is a huge work, but in the Turbine Hall it is confined to just the eastern end and rises, relatively, to not a great height. A shame that the space should so define it, but it does - that's the point of the Unilever series. Whiteread is a fabulously talented monumental artist, and Embankment is a monumental work. How fabulous it would be outdoors. Never mind the plinth, imagine this in Trafalgar Square. Walking among the white boxes, looking down on them, is thoroughly enjoyable - but somewhere else. Even somewhere else indoors - a smaller room.

Size Matters

Given that she designed it for this space, it seems harsh to criticize the impact of the space - but after two days of looking down and walking among I left Embankment wishing it was six times the size it was, filling the Turbine Hall from end to end and rising way up past the middle platform so that even there you would be walking in it as well as looking down on it.

Directions To Build Your Own Box

And my favorite part was the books on sale in the shop which were hundreds of templates for building your own boxes. Great will-power prevented me from spending my money.

Paul Dorrell says:

"I know many sculptors who never bother with maquettes when creating a monumental work on speculation."

Roy Keane - The Unquiet Man

UPDATE: On Friday, November 18 Roy Keane has left Manchester United after twelve and a half years service, supposedly by mutual arrangement. However sources suggest Keane had a final heated argument with the manager after being told he wasn't wanted for a reserve game against West Brom last night. Keane was also told he was being stripped of the captaincy. As a former player almost put it, when you leave the team in red - it's like a bolt from the blue.

Manchester United may be big business - We're a Massive Club - but ultimately their financial success depends on how skilled people use their feet. Arguably the most powerful of those feet-users over the last twenty years is one Roy Keane. Not always the prettiest - not a Giggs, Cantona, or Best is he - but usually the most effective. Thing is with Roy though, he tends to not only use his feet. His mouth plays a role in his life. And when your income is as many thousands of pounds a week as his is, well his mouth can cause quite a commotion.

Here then, in seven chapters of headlines - each in reverse order for dramatic effect and anti-climax, is the life of Roy Keane in the last few weeks leading up to this final bust-up:
